Why we all need to build resilience
Resilience is a critical personal competency for individuals who wish to re-ignite their careers, succeed under sustained pressure; quickly recover from work, health or relationship setbacks and fulfil their life goals. Equally, Resilience has become a key strategic competence for organisations that want to attract, retain and motivate great people.
Unfortunately, many of us “fall” out of the “Zone” due to major setbacks, daily adversities or complacency – basically a lack of personal resilience. The Resilience Institute calls this stress-vulnerability phenomenon the “Death Spiral”©. Extreme language, however, for anyone that has been, or currently is, in the Death Spiral, it pretty well sums it up.
With uncertainty and stress at work and at home, the problems happen on all dimensions. Immune resilience falls (inviting illness); relationships become fragile. Thinking, memory and learning is disordered and meaning is hard to find. Research shows that highly stressed people are most likely to develop cardiovascular disease and are significantly more likely to have declines in cognitive and physical functioning.
